Cinnamon Grand

Colombo, Sri Lanka
★★★★★

Cinnamon Grand Colombo is a large five-star city hotel on Galle Road in Colombo 3, next door to the Crescat Boulevard shopping arcade and a short walk from Galle Face Green. It is one of the capital's busiest social addresses: a hotel of restaurants and bars as much as bedrooms, from the open-air village kitchen at Nuga Gama to the London Grill, one of the oldest fine-dining rooms in the city.

Which room should I book at Cinnamon Grand?

Every room and suite has a king-size bed, air conditioning, a safe, a mini fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, a flat-screen television, Wi-Fi, bathrobes and slippers, and a bathroom with both a bathtub and a separate shower. The names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room; Cinnamon's own website uses slightly different names, given with each category.

  • Superior Room – the entry category: 32 square metres with a king-size bed and a city view. A good, practical base for a short stay in Colombo.
  • Deluxe Room – the same 32 square metres and king-size bed, but with a better outlook: depending on the room, over the city, the pool, the gardens or towards the sea, and some are on higher floors. If a sea or pool view matters to you, tell us when you book and we will ask the hotel to allocate one.
  • Executive Room – known at the hotel as the Grand Club Room: 32 square metres with a king-size bed (twin beds are available in this category), a sofa or armchair and a coffee machine, aimed at business travellers. It is part of the hotel's Club Rooms and Suites tier; the hotel also runs an Executive Lounge, open around the clock, with breakfast, high tea and evening happy hours, so ask us to confirm lounge access when you book.
  • Premium Suite – a suite in the hotel's Grand Suite category (listed on Cinnamon's site as the Deluxe Suite): around 64 square metres, twice the size of a standard room, with a combined living and bedroom space, a king-size bed, a sofa and a city or pool view.
  • Executive Suite – a suite booked at the club level. Cinnamon’s website lists only one suite category between the Club Rooms and the Presidential Suite, the Grand Suite of about 64 square metres, so expect a suite of that size and layout; if a particular view or floor matters, tell us and we will confirm the exact suite with the hotel before you pay.
  • Presidential Suite – the Grand Presidential Suite, the hotel's largest at a little over 141 square metres, on a high floor with city views, a combined living and bedroom layout, a king-size bed, a coffee machine and a bathtub. It sleeps up to four guests.

Every category takes up to three adults, the third on an extra bed, and up to two children. Children aged 12 and over count as adults. Some rooms have interconnecting doors, which is worth asking for if you are a family booking two rooms.

Where can I eat and drink at Cinnamon Grand?

Few hotels in Sri Lanka have as many places to eat under one roof. Nuga Gama recreates a traditional Sri Lankan village in the hotel grounds, with island food cooked by village cooks and, on some evenings, cultural dance performances. The London Grill is one of Colombo's oldest fine-dining restaurants, serving dishes under cloches with wines from the hotel's cellar. Lagoon is a seafood restaurant where you choose your catch and how it is cooked, and Plates is the all-day international and Sri Lankan buffet. For a drink there is Cheers Pub, an English-style sports bar; Breeze Bar by the pool; the Tea Lounge, which becomes a whisky lounge at night; and Coffee Stop. Room service runs from breakfast in bed to late-night snacks.

What facilities does the hotel have?

NIJA Spa offers Ayurveda treatments, Balinese and Swedish massages, hot stone and deep tissue therapies and shorter express treatments. Alongside it are a fully equipped gym with a movement studio, and wet-area facilities with a chill pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. There is an outdoor swimming pool with its own bar, a Kids' Club where children can play and make things, free parking, and a long list of ballrooms and meeting rooms, which is why the hotel is so often busy with weddings and conferences.

What is nearby?

The hotel stands in Kollupitiya, at the southern end of the city's old centre. Crescat Boulevard, with its boutiques, cafés and food court, is right next door. Galle Face Green, the seafront promenade where Colombo comes out in the evening, is under a kilometre to the north in a straight line. The Seema Malaka pavilion on Beira Lake and Gangaramaya Temple are both within a kilometre, with the rest of Beira Lake beyond. Viharamahadevi Park, the National Museum and the Lotus Tower are each about 1.5 kilometres away, and the bazaar streets of Pettah a little over two.

Can I arrive by train?

Yes. Kompannavediya station is about 600 metres away in a straight line and Kollupitiya about 800 metres, both on the coast line. Colombo Fort, the main terminus for trains to Kandy, Ella and the north, is about 1.7 kilometres away, a short taxi or tuk-tuk ride.

How do I get from the airport to Cinnamon Grand?

Bandaranaike International Airport is about 30 kilometres north of the hotel in a straight line, reached by the airport expressway and then through the city, so allow for traffic at busy times of day. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Cinnamon Grand, which meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you to the door.

Who is Cinnamon Grand best suited to?

It suits travellers who want to be in the middle of things: business visitors, families who like choice at mealtimes, and anyone spending a first or last night in Colombo who wants good food and a pool without leaving the hotel. It is a big, lively hotel rather than a quiet one. Its sister hotel Cinnamon Lakeside, on the shore of Beira Lake, is a calmer alternative a little to the north.
