Bundala National Park Safari from Mattala City

From$125

Bundala National Park sits on the dry southern coast near Hambantota, a stretch of thorny scrubland and shallow lagoons that was Sri Lanka's first site to earn Ramsar recognition as a wetland of international importance. This safari takes you from Mattala into that landscape by 4WD game vehicle, with an English-speaking driver who doubles as your tracker, in search of the birds, mammals and reptiles that make the park one of the country's richest wildlife circuits.

The lagoons of Koholankala, Malala, Embilikala and Bundala form a connected wetland system that draws waterbirds in considerable numbers. Painted storks gather on the grassy margins, purple swamphens pick their way through reed beds and lily ponds, and water buffalo wade through the marsh channels in loose herds. Peafowl display along the dry grass under the tree line, and with close to two hundred bird species recorded here, including the greater flamingo as the park's best-known visitor, there is always something moving across the water or the scrub even outside peak migration.

The park's biodiversity goes well beyond birdlife. Surveys have logged over three hundred vertebrate species and more than fifty types of butterfly within its boundaries, alongside Asian elephants, leopards, spotted deer, wild boar, jackals, mongoose and crocodiles. Bundala's mix of habitats, recognised since 2005 as a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve, means the terrain shifts from open lagoon to dense scrub within short distances, so bring binoculars and a camera with some reach.

Safety inside the park is taken seriously, particularly around elephants. Your guide will decide when and where the jeep stops, and you are asked to stay inside the vehicle at those points rather than stepping down, since lone elephants in particular can react badly to being approached. Following the tracker's instructions throughout the drive is part of what keeps the experience both close to the wildlife and genuinely safe.

The tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off from Mattala, the safari jeep and driver-tracker, and bottled water per person, with all taxes and service charges covered. Park entrance tickets are included only when the "+ Tickets" option is selected; food, drinks, gratuities and personal expenses are not included.
