Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo is a five-star hotel on the shore of Beira Lake in Colombo 2, a few minutes from the Fort business district, with a large outdoor pool, lake views and eight restaurants and bars. Cinnamon calls it a resort in the city, and the lake and pool make it feel quieter than its central address would suggest.
The rooms are 29 square metres, with a city view, a sofa or armchair, tea and coffee making facilities, an iron, and a bathroom with a bathtub and a separate shower. The suites face the lake and the pool. The names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.
Every category takes up to three adults, the third on an extra bed, and up to two children; children aged 12 and over count as adults. Some rooms have interconnecting doors, which is worth asking for if you are a family booking two rooms. The hotel also has Orris Suites with lake and pool views, which are not in our booking list; ask us if you would like one.
The Dining Room serves an international buffet or à la carte menu, with a Sunday brunch. Royal Thai, which the hotel says is the only restaurant in Sri Lanka with a certificate of authenticity from the Thai Embassy, and Long Feng, for Chinese food, both have private dining rooms. ColomBar pours over 100 kinds of arrack and local brews alongside Sri Lankan dishes such as crab curry. The Lobby Lounge has live music, lake views, sushi platters and an afternoon high tea. Pool Bar and Bistro bakes pizzas in a wood-fired oven, Goodies sells French pastries and cakes, and The Library is a quiet bar for in-house guests and members, with books, single malts and a pool table.
The expansive outdoor pool, with loungers and drinks served at the water's edge, is the centre of hotel life. The Powerdrome gym has imported equipment, personal trainers, a steam room and a sauna, and spa treatments are available. In the evening the hotel runs Eight Degrees of Wonder, a cruise on Beira Lake as the city lights come on. Cinnamon's rangers also lead guided outings into the city, including a tour of Colombo's temples, kovils and mosques, a wetland outing in search of otters and sea eagles and a day as a zookeeper's assistant. The ballrooms and a floating venue on the lake make it a popular place for weddings and events, so expect music around the pool on festive evenings.
The hotel sits on Beira Lake in Slave Island, between the Fort and the southern suburbs. Galle Face Green, the seafront promenade, is about 800 metres away in a straight line, and the Lotus Tower about a kilometre. The colonial buildings of the Fort, among them the old lighthouse and clock tower, are close by, and the bazaars of Pettah and the striped Red Mosque are each about a kilometre away. Across the lake, the Seema Malaka pavilion and Gangaramaya Temple are about 1.5 kilometres away.
Yes. Colombo Fort, the main station for trains to Kandy, Ella, Galle and the north, is about 500 metres away in a straight line, and the hotel is a short taxi or tuk-tuk ride from the station.
Bandaranaike International Airport is about 28 kilometres north of the hotel in a straight line, reached by the airport expressway and then through the city, so allow for traffic at busy times of day. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Cinnamon Lakeside, which meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you to the door.
It suits travellers who want a central Colombo base with room to unwind: couples and families who will spend time by the pool, business visitors working in the Fort, and anyone breaking a long journey with a night or two in the city. Its sister hotel Cinnamon Grand, on Galle Road about a kilometre to the south, is busier and closer to the shops. The property is old but efforts have been made to maintain it at an acceptable level. The hotel staff makes the difference when compared with other international chains. Room size is very good compared to newer properties.
