Question 1

What is Terminalia arjuna used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Terminalia arjuna bark is primarily used in Ayurvedic medicine to support heart health and circulation. It is formulated into preparations such as Arjunarishtaya, a fermented tonic, as well as decoctions and powders. Ayurvedic practitioners also use it as a general tonic and, secondarily, in formulations related to liver support and bone health.

Question 2

What is the Sinhala name for Terminalia arjuna?

Accepted Answer

Terminalia arjuna is commonly known as Kumbuk in Sinhala. It is a familiar tree in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones, particularly along riverbanks and ancient tank bunds, and is widely recognised in both traditional medicine and landscape contexts.

Question 3

What is Arjunarishtaya and how is it used?

Accepted Answer

Arjunarishtaya is a classical Ayurvedic fermented liquid preparation made primarily from the bark of Terminalia arjuna, combined with other herbal ingredients. It is used in traditional Sri Lankan medicine to support cardiac function and general vitality. It is produced by licensed Ayurvedic manufacturers in Sri Lanka and is widely available in pharmacies and Ayurvedic outlets.

Question 4

Is Terminalia arjuna the same as Aralu?

Accepted Answer

No. Aralu is the common Sri Lankan name for Terminalia chebula, a different species in the same genus. Aralu is one of the three fruits in Triphala and is used mainly for digestive and detoxifying purposes. Terminalia arjuna (Kumbuk) is valued for its bark rather than its fruit and is associated primarily with cardiovascular applications.

Question 5

Where can I find Terminalia arjuna trees in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Kumbuk trees grow naturally along riverbanks, canal edges, and ancient reservoir systems, particularly in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones. They are frequently encountered in areas such as Polonnaruwa and along major river courses. The species is also cultivated in Ayurvedic herb gardens and home gardens across the island.

Question 6

Can I buy Terminalia arjuna products in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Arjunarishtaya and other arjuna-based preparations are sold in licensed Ayurvedic pharmacies, health shops, and some supermarkets across Sri Lanka. When purchasing, look for products certified by Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda to ensure quality and authenticity. Reputable brands produce standardised formulations that follow classical Ayurvedic texts.

Question 7

Is Terminalia arjuna safe to use?

Accepted Answer

Terminalia arjuna has a long history of use in South Asian traditional medicine and is generally considered safe when used in traditional formulations at recommended amounts. However, as with any medicinal preparation, individuals with existing health conditions — particularly cardiovascular conditions — should consult a qualified healthcare professional before starting any arjuna-based regimen.
