Kolapathana Falls
Kolapathana Falls, also known as Kolapathana Ella, is a picturesque multi-step waterfall located near the village of Mandaram Nuwara in Sri Lanka's Nuwara Eliya District. Fed by a stream originating from the Pidurutalagala Forest Reserve, the falls descend approximately 50 meters, creating a serene and captivating natural spectacle.
Mandaram Nuwara, often referred to as the "town with a rainy sky," is nestled at the base of Pidurutalagala Mountain. The village is enveloped by mountains, resulting in limited daily sunlight and frequent mist, which adds to its enchanting atmosphere. The local economy primarily revolves around vegetable cultivation and tea plantations.
To reach Kolapathana Falls, visitors must undertake a hike of approximately 800 meters from Mandaram Nuwara. The trail offers breathtaking views and traverses diverse landscapes, making the journey as rewarding as the destination. It's important to note that the waterfall serves as a source of drinking water for the local community; therefore, bathing directly under the falls is prohibited. However, designated areas downstream, such as the Purahangala Natural Pool, are available for bathing.
The optimal time to visit Kolapathana Falls is during the rainy season, when the water flow is at its peak, enhancing the falls' beauty. Visitors are encouraged to respect the environment by avoiding littering and adhering to local guidelines to preserve the area's pristine condition.
