About this experience
Gregory Lake, known locally as Lake Gregory, sits at the centre of Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka's central highlands. The reservoir was created in the late nineteenth century by British Governor Sir William Gregory, who transformed what had been a swampy bog into a scenic 200-acre lake. Today the lake and its adjoining park form one of the most popular leisure destinations in the hill country, drawing families, day-trippers and nature lovers throughout the year.
The park surrounding the lake offers a relaxed atmosphere well suited to picnics, leisurely walks, and simply taking in the cool highland air. Boats and jet skis are available to hire on the water, and windsurfing is an option for those with the relevant experience. Ponies trot along the grassy lakeside areas, and pony rides are a familiar sight among visiting families. Food stalls and shaded seating areas are dotted throughout the grounds, and a seaplane landing jetty sits on the lake itself, lending the spot an added point of interest.
A Lakpura entrance ticket, which includes a guided service, grants access to the Lake Gregory park area. Any additional on-site activities — such as boat or jet ski hire — carry separate charges payable at the venue.
