Hiriwadunna Viharaya (Hiriwadunna Sri Bodhiraja Forest Hermitage) è un tempio buddista situato nel villaggio di Hiriwadunna nel distretto di Anuradhapura, a soli 2 km da la città di Habarana. Diversi resti di antiche strutture sono sparsi nel terreno del tempio. Il vecchio lago Hiriwadunna, costruito dal re Wasaba, si trova vicino al sito del tempio.

Questo sito è diventato popolare qualche anno fa quando un sacerdote locale pubblicò un libro di teorie del complotto intitolato ‘Apa Upan Me Helabima Budun Upan Jambudweepayai’, in cui affermava che il Buddha fosse nato e avesse vissuto nell'antica Sri Lanka. Un grande blocco di pietra, probabilmente un Asanagara (seggio simbolico del Buddha), si trova alla base del vecchio albero Bo, ora parzialmente sepolto sotto le radici dell'albero ed è stato identificato come Vajrasanaya, il luogo in cui il Buddha si sedette durante l'illuminazione. Indipendentemente dalla validità di queste idee nel libro, che sono state rifiutate da molti e persino bandite dalle biblioteche, Hiriwadunna è un luogo storico che deve essere visitato da chiunque sia interessato alla storia dello Sri Lanka e al patrimonio buddista.

Anuradhapura District

Anuradhapura is belongs to the North Central Province in to Sri Lanka.Anuradhapura is one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka, famous for its well-preserved ruins of ancient Lankan civilization. The city, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies 205 km north of the current capital Colombo in Sri Lanka.

In the sacred city of Anuradhapura and in the vicinity are a large number of ruins. The ruins consist of three classes of buildings, dagobas, monastic buildings, and pokuna (ponds).
