Der Flughafen Katukurunda ist ein Inlandsflughafen in der Nähe der Stadt Kalutara in Sri Lanka. Er ist auch ein Militärflughafen, bekannt als Sri Lanka Air Force Katukurunda oder SLAF Katukurunda

Der Flughafen liegt 2,5 Seemeilen (4,6 km) südöstlich der Stadt Kalutara. Er liegt auf einer Höhe von 3 Metern (10 Fuß) und verfügt über eine Landebahn mit der Bezeichnung 11/29 und einer Bitumenoberfläche von 1.006 x 46 Metern (3.301 Fuß × 151 Fuß).

Geschichte

Ursprünglich als Royal Naval Air Station HMS Ukussa gegründet, wurde es 1984 von der sri-lankischen Luftwaffe reaktiviert. Es war Austragungsort zahlreicher Autorennen, die in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Air Force Sports Board und mit Genehmigung des Sportministeriums durchgeführt wurden.

Der 1944 vom Fleet Air Arm der Royal Navy gegründete Stützpunkt war zu seiner Blütezeit der größte Flugplatz der Royal Navy und beschäftigte 300 Offiziere, 3000 Matrosen und 100 Frauen des Women's Royal Naval Service. Er wartete jederzeit über 100 Flugzeuge und unterhielt zudem eine Flugzeugreparaturwerft.

About Kalutara District

Kalutara is situated approximately 42km south of Colombo. Once a spice trading post, Kalutara was controlled variously by the Portuguese, Dutch and British. The town is famous for quality bamboo basket and mats and the most luscious mangosteens.

The 38-meter long Kalutara Bridge was built at the mouth of the Kalu Ganga River and serves as a major link between the country's Western and Southern border. At the southern end of the bridge lies the 3 stories-high Kalutara Vihara, a Buddhist temple built in the 1960s which holds the distinction of being the only stupa in the world that is hollow.

About Western Province

The Western Province is the most densely populated province of Sri Lanka.
