About this experience
Home to more than 400 wild elephants, Udawalawe National Park is one of the surest places in Sri Lanka to watch these gentle giants roam free in their natural habitat — their high concentration here makes sightings all but guaranteed. On this private safari you travel in your own jeep, with an experienced driver-tracker setting the pace along the reserve’s muddy, open tracks.
Crossing the savannah grasslands you’ll often meet elephants in large herds, alongside jackals, spotted deer, wild water buffalo, mongoose and basking crocodiles. Birdlife is a highlight too — from sea, fishing and crested serpent eagles to the Sri Lanka grey hornbill — while the reservoir banks, where animals gather to drink, make a memorable spot to pause for photographs.
