April is worth noting separately: the Sinhala and Tamil New Year period turns Nuwara Eliya into one of the liveliest destinations in the country, with the town filling to capacity. How do I get to Lake Gregory from Colombo?

Nuwara Eliya is approximately 180 km from Colombo by road, typically around four to five hours depending on traffic and the route taken via Kandy or the expressway to Avissawella. The scenic train journey from Colombo Fort to Nanu Oya (the nearest station, about 9 km from town) is a well-regarded experience in its own right, passing through tea country and cloud forest.

From Nanu Oya station, tuk-tuks and taxis are available for the short ride into town. Once in Nuwara Eliya, Lake Gregory is an easy walk from the bus stand and most central accommodation.
