Wilpattu National Park Safari from Sigiriya City

From$58

Set off before dawn from Sigiriya for a full morning in Wilpattu — Sri Lanka’s largest national park and one of its most rewarding for wildlife. Famed for its villus (natural sand-rimmed lakes), dry-zone forest and open grassland, Wilpattu is prime leopard and sloth-bear country, with far fewer jeeps than the southern parks.

What you might see

  • Elusive Sri Lankan leopard and sloth bear — Wilpattu’s star attractions
  • Herds of elephants, spotted and barking deer, sambar, wild boar, water buffalo and jackal
  • Water birds and raptors around the villus, plus reptiles and clouds of butterflies

Your morning

Your chauffeur collects you from your Sigiriya hotel at 5:00 am and drives you north to Wilpattu, reaching the park gate by about 7:00 am — the golden hour when animals are most active. You transfer to a safari jeep with an English-speaking driver-tracker and set out across the reserve, pausing at the villus where wildlife gathers to drink.

The drive winds through dry tropical forest and silver-blue pools that mirror the sky, with plenty of stops for photographs. You’re back at the entrance by about 10:30 am, then returned to your Sigiriya hotel by roughly 2:00 pm.
