Sri Lanka is home to a rich cultural heritage while arts and crafts takes centre stage in so many occasions. There are several types of instruments used in traditional Sri Lankan music while drums take centre stage with its history spanning over 2500 years. Drums are used in various rituals, ceremonies conducted in Buddhist temples, for means of communication and even for entertainment.
This 12-inch small Dandu Beraya from Lakpura is a traditional Sri Lankan bamboo drum that is used mainly in folk dances and communication. Made from a hallowed bamboo trunk, it is played by two sticks made of Atteriya wood. The drum is tied around the waist for the ease of movement while its unique for its wood-based resonance without animal hide which is the usual case in other drums.
