Kings
The kings of Sri Lanka played a pivotal role in shaping the island’s rich history, culture, and identity. Sri Lanka's monarchy spanned over two millennia, starting from King Vijaya in 543 BCE, who is traditionally considered the island’s first ruler. The Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa periods are particularly significant, marked by architectural brilliance, religious advancements, and flourishing trade.
King Dutugemunu (161-137 BCE) is celebrated for unifying the island and promoting Buddhism. Similarly, King Parakramabahu I (1153–1186 CE) of Polonnaruwa is revered for his contributions to irrigation, most notably the Parakrama Samudraya, which sustained agriculture for centuries. The ancient capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa still showcase these rulers' architectural and cultural achievements.
The monarchs fostered Buddhism as a state religion, commissioning stupas, temples, and monasteries that remain iconic symbols of Sri Lankan heritage. Later rulers, like King Nissanka Malla and King Vijayabahu, strengthened the island’s position as a hub of trade and diplomacy in South Asia.
Sri Lanka’s monarchy faced challenges from invasions, internal strife, and colonial forces, leading to its decline by 1815 with the British annexation. However, the legacy of Sri Lankan kings endures in the island’s culture, traditions, and historic landmarks, making their stories an integral part of its identity.
