King Parakramabahu II
King Parakramabahu II, also known as Parakramabahu the Great, was a prominent ruler of the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka during the 12th century. He is renowned for his military achievements, administrative reforms, and significant contributions to the island's cultural and religious heritage. His reign marked a period of prosperity, peace, and political stability in Sri Lanka.
Parakramabahu II is celebrated for unifying the island under one rule after a period of fragmentation, defeating invaders, and strengthening the kingdom's influence in the region. He was also a patron of Buddhism, constructing numerous temples, stupas, and religious structures, most notably the *Gal Vihara*, which houses magnificent Buddha statues carved into granite rock.
His reign saw significant advancements in infrastructure, including the development of irrigation systems and the restoration of ancient reservoirs and canals. These improvements helped boost agriculture, particularly rice production, which became a major economic driver of the kingdom. Parakramabahu II's focus on infrastructure and his ability to harness the natural resources of the island laid the foundation for Sri Lanka's long-term prosperity.
The best time to explore the historical sites associated with King Parakramabahu II is during the dry season, from December to April, when the weather is ideal for visiting the ancient city of Polonnaruwa and other landmarks that showcase his legacy and the grandeur of his reign.
