When is the best time of year to see whales off Trincomalee?
Blue whales are recorded off Trincomalee between March and July, when conditions on the east coast are generally favourable. Trincomalee's season is distinct from the south-coast whale-watching period, so if you are planning a trip specifically to this port, the March-to-July window is the most reliably supported by cetacean observation records.
What whale species might I see on this tour?
Blue whales are the principal species targeted on tours departing Trincomalee. Sperm whales and Bryde's whales are also encountered on occasion. Dolphins — including spinner dolphins — are frequently seen during the passage out to and back from the deeper water.
How close does the boat get to the whales?
Sri Lankan regulations require the vessel's engine to be switched off at a minimum of 100 metres from any whale, and the boat does not approach closer than that distance at any point. This is a legal requirement applying to all licensed whale-watching operators in the country.
What is included in the tour price?
The tour includes the shared boat journey, a licensed marine mammal naturalist guide, all required safety equipment, and pickup and drop-off at the port. Meals, gratuities and personal expenses are not included.
What should I bring with me?
The open ocean is cooler and breezier than the shoreline, so light layers are useful alongside sun protection for the face and arms. A camera with a longer lens will give you the best chance of capturing whale surfacing moments at the regulation approach distance.
