スリランカ最長の川マハウェリ川沿いにワスガムワ国立公園をドライブします。乾燥した熱帯林が水たまりや広大な未開拓のスクラブランドに開かれています。ここは象の国です。河川地形は象を開放地に引き寄せ、同じ池にはワニ、オオトカゲ、ニシキヘビが生息し、水生鳥が周辺に集まります。水から離れた森には、ヒョウ、ナマケグマ、紫顔ラングル猿、イノシシ、サンバー、シカ、水牛が生息しています。ドライバーはトラッカーを兼ねており、必要な時にエンジンを切り、自分で探す必要がないように森を読み取ります。
