コロンボのリプトン・サーカスにあるダワタガハ・モスクは、あらゆるムスリムの家庭でよく知られる存在となっており、信者はこの聖者の霊廟の前を通る際に必ず敬意を払う。

この150年の歴史を持つ聖廟は、ムスリムの聖人であるシェイフ・ウスマン・シッディーク・イブン・アブドゥッラフマンの安息の地であり、彼はアラビアのアラファトからセイロンを訪れ、バランゴダのアダムズ・ピークを訪問し、その後シナモン・ガーデンズとして知られる地域に居住したという興味深い歴史を持つ。

1820年、シンハラ人の女性の油売りが一家の唯一の稼ぎ手として、バンバラピティヤからマラダーナへシナモンの森を通って日々の行商に出ていた。

その森の中で彼女はカシューナッツの木の根につまずいて転倒し、壺は粉々に砕けた。「アイヨー、アイヨー!」と彼女は叫んだ。「今日、家族の食べ物がない。唯一の収入源が壊れてしまった。」彼女は絶望して泣き疲れ、そのまま眠り込んだ。すると声が彼女を目覚めさせた。その声は彼女に絶望しないように告げ、立ち上がるよう促し、すぐにすべて良くなると保証した。彼女は見上げたが誰もおらず、再び泣き崩れた。

再びその声は同じ慰めの言葉を繰り返した。深い森の中で人影を見ることがほとんどない状況でこれは信じ難いことであった。すると突然、緑の衣をまとった老人が現れ、その神聖な姿は彼女にとって心を打つものであった。

「恐れることはない」と彼は言った。「あなたの油を返してあげよう。ただ壺を持ってきなさい。」

女性はマラダーナへ行き、常連客であるムスリムのママ・レッベの家に行き、彼の母親に新しい壺を求めた。母親がその奇妙な依頼を尋ねると、油売りの女性は「戻ってきて私の話をします」と答えた。彼女は壺を持って森へ戻ると、老人はダワタまたはデヴァタの木にもたれていた。彼は壺を最初に壊れた場所に置くよう指示し、地面を踏みつけると油が地中から湧き出た。

女性は驚きのあまり言葉を失った。カシューナッツの木の葉を使って油をすくい、壺を満たすように言われた。「これで生計を立てられる」と彼は言い、さらにムスリムの客たちにこの出来事を伝え、彼が現れた場所を示すように頼んだ。女性は聖人に敬意を表し、祝福を祈った。

彼女はママ・レッベの家へ戻り、その奇跡の話を伝えた。一行はその場所を調査し、壺の破片、油の湧出、カシューナッツの木、そしてダワタの木など、奇跡の証拠を確認した。

彼らは祈りを捧げ、奇跡の証人となれたことをアッラーに感謝した。

その後、女性の証言は真実であると認められ、彼女は食事を与えられた上で帰された。

About Western Province

The Western Province is the most densely populated province of Sri Lanka. It is home to the legislative capital Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte as well to Colombo, the nation's administrative and business center.
