A safari through Yala National Park puts you in open grassland and scrub forest in the southeast of Sri Lanka, riding in a private open-top jeep with a tracker who knows where to look. Yala is the most visited national park in the country, and for good reason: its Block I section is recorded as having the highest leopard density of anywhere in the park system, which means a real chance of seeing a Sri Lankan leopard stretched along a branch or resting on open rock, even if sightings are never guaranteed with a wild animal.
The park itself runs across the Southern and Uva Provinces, a stretch of dry terrain dotted with lagoons, rock outcrops and tree cover that supports an unusually wide range of animals. Forty-four species of mammal live here, among them the Sri Lankan leopard, the Sri Lankan elephant, the sloth bear and the wild water buffalo, several of them species of conservation concern. Elephants are a common sight crossing the tracks or browsing at the treeline, and buffalo often graze out on the open plains where the grass gives way to water.
Your jeep is open-sided with bench seating and a canopy roof, built for unobstructed views and for standing to get a clearer look or a photograph. The tracker travels with you throughout, reading tracks and calls and positioning the vehicle for sightings rather than simply driving a loop. This is a private booking, so the jeep and the pace of the day are yours alone, not shared with other travellers.
The safari runs for six and a half hours, giving enough time to cover meaningful ground across the park's trails without rushing between sightings. A private safari jeep and an English-speaking tracker are included, and park entrance tickets are included when you select the jeep-with-tickets option. Hotel pickup and drop-off are part of the experience if your accommodation sits within five kilometres of the park entrance gate; food, drinks and gratuities are for you to arrange separately.
This safari is best suited to travellers without serious heart conditions or back problems, and is not recommended for pregnant travellers or children aged five or under, with a minimum age of six. It is not wheelchair accessible. Beyond that, come ready for dust, early starts or late light, and the patience that wildlife-watching asks of anyone who wants to see a leopard in the wild rather than a zoo.
