Freewheel downhill from Nuwara Eliya to Kandy on this private bicycle tour through Sri Lanka's tea country. You start at 8:00 am in the centre of Nuwara Eliya, where your mountain bike, helmet and equipment are ready and your experienced cycling guide gives clear instructions on the 85 km route. A back-up vehicle with a cycle carrier follows you all the way. The road drops from 1,868 m above sea level in Nuwara Eliya to around 500 m in Kandy, so the ride is fast and exhilarating and you need to keep good control of your bike on the corners. Green tea estates, distant mountains, graceful waterfalls and drifting mist line the way.
You stop at a tea estate to meet the tea pluckers, talk with them through your guide and learn how to pick the best leaves, then put on a tea basket and try plucking yourself. Next comes a tea factory, where you see how the plucked leaf becomes tea, learn about its varieties and qualities, can buy fresh tea as a souvenir, and warm up with a cup of hot Ceylon tea. Then you continue downhill to finish in Kandy. Cycles, your cycling guide and supporting crew, the back-up vehicle, and water and refreshments during the ride are included. The tour is private and open to riders aged seven and above. Food, drinks beyond those included, and gratuities are not included.
