Gal Oya rahvuspargi paadisõidul

Set out across the glassy waters of the Gal Oya National Park on the only boat safari of its kind in Sri Lanka. Gliding over the vast Senanayake Samudraya — the island’s largest reservoir — you drift past forested islands and half-submerged trees where elephants are often seen swimming from one shore to the next, trunks raised above the water. Mugger crocodiles bask along the banks, water birds work the shallows, and the wild, roadless hills of one of the country’s least-visited parks rise all around you.

Spanning more than 25,000 hectares of grassland, evergreen forest and open water, Gal Oya is prime territory for its celebrated big three — swimming elephants, endemic mugger crocodiles and the elusive leopard hidden deep in the jungle — alongside primates, wild cats and over 150 recorded species of birds. Each departure is a private two-hour cruise with your boatman, timed to the softest light and the calmest water of the day.

Boats operate three times daily: an early-morning run at 6:30 am, a mid-morning run at 9:30 am and an afternoon run at 3:30 pm. The dawn and late-afternoon departures are the most rewarding for wildlife and photography, when the animals come down to the water and the reservoir turns to gold.
