About this experience

Gal Oya is built around Senanayake Samudraya, Sri Lanka's largest reservoir, and the terrain shifts as you drive: savannah and mountain grassland giving way to dense shrubland and tropical forest. That mix is why the wildlife list here is one of the richest in the country — resident elephant herds, leopard, sloth bear, spotted deer and large groups of water buffalo.

Your driver is also your tracker, and the jeep is yours alone: one private 4x4 seating up to six, three hours inside the park. The birding is exceptional even by Sri Lankan standards — spot-billed pelicans, red-faced malkohas, cormorants, oriental darters, grey herons, sea eagles and grey-headed fish eagles. March to July is the strongest window for sightings.

We meet you at the Gal Oya National Park gate, and pick-up and drop-off are free from anywhere within 5 km of it. Bottled water is provided. Park entrance fees are included when you choose the Jeep with Tickets option; on Jeep Only you settle them in cash at the gate.

One thing worth knowing: the famous sight of elephants swimming between the reservoir islands is a boat-safari view, not a jeep one. The boat trip runs on the water as a separate experience — book the Gal Oya boat safari alongside this drive if it is on your list.

Keep Jungle Drive
A super 5/6 hours spent with knowledgeable guides and fun in a jeep. Bird life plentiful. Elephants, jackals, deer, water buffaloes to name a few. Take sun screen and water.

Drive and boat trips were good in themselves but wildlife limited
We did the boat safari. Pleasant trip but on a sunny day it can get very hot. Good for elephants and large water birds. The fringes of the lake are either grass or rocks so we saw few smaller birds. Next day we did a jee…

Not to be missed. Unique experience A boat safari with guides. Very beautiful! Many elephants and birds. Even monkeys and crocodiles. We stayed until sunset. Which was amazing to see.
