About this experience
Hot air ballooning from Sigiriya is one of the few ways to see Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle from above — a slow, silent drift over the patchwork of paddy fields, jungle canopy, ancient reservoirs and rocky outcrops that make this part of the island so distinctive. Flights operate from the Dambulla and Kandalama area, lifting passengers into the early-morning sky as the sun clears the horizon and the landscape below shakes off its mist. The experience is shared rather than private, and open to anyone aged ten and above who is able to stand for the duration of the flight.
Departure happens in the hour around sunrise, when the air is at its coolest and the winds are at their calmest — the conditions that make ballooning both safe and especially rewarding. From altitude, the pilot points out landmarks that are otherwise hidden among the trees: the broad expanse of Kandalama Tank, the gilded Dambulla Golden Buddha statue catching the first light, and the unmistakable silhouette of Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the ancient UNESCO-listed citadel rising abruptly from the surrounding plain. The flight path is determined by the wind on the day, so no two journeys follow exactly the same course, and neither the take-off point nor the landing point is fixed in advance.
The balloons operating on this route are registered with the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka, whose regulations require annual airworthiness inspections and mandate that pilots hold a Commercial Balloon Pilot Licence validated by Sri Lankan authorities. The wicker gondolas carry a group of passengers alongside the pilot, and from the basket the views stretch across tropical forest canopy, terraced fields and the reservoir-dotted terrain of the Cultural Triangle — a perspective that no road or footpath can replicate.
The activity runs from November through to late April or early May. It is not available between 1 June and 20 October, when the Southwest monsoon makes conditions unsuitable. Every flight is subject to the pilot's assessment of conditions on the morning itself; wind, rain or poor visibility can result in cancellation, and this possibility is simply part of the nature of balloon travel. If you are staying in Habarana, Kandalama, Sigiriya or Dambulla, a complimentary hotel pickup is included, with timings that vary according to your location.
Comfortable, casual clothing is the practical choice, with closed-toed shoes and a cap or hat. Temperatures can drop a little at higher altitudes, so a light sweater or scarf tucked into a bag is worth considering. After the balloon touches down, passengers receive a commemorative cap and a first-flight certificate as a record of the occasion. Bottled water is provided per person during the experience. Food and beverages beyond what is included, gratuities and personal expenses fall outside the arrangement.
