Question 1

What is the Malwatu Oya stone bridge near Puliyankulama?

Accepted Answer

It is an ancient flat-stone bridge spanning the Malwatu Oya river near the village of Puliyankulama in the Anuradhapura District. The structure is built from large granite slabs fitted without mortar, likely dating to the Anuradhapura or early Polonnaruwa period. It served pilgrimage and irrigation routes across the North Central plains of Sri Lanka.

Question 2

How do I get to the Malwatu Oya stone bridge from Anuradhapura?

Accepted Answer

The bridge is around 40–50 km from Anuradhapura city by road, with the final stretch typically requiring a private vehicle or tuk-tuk along an unpaved track. There is no dedicated public bus service to the site. Arranging a local driver or guide in advance from Anuradhapura or Tambuttegama is the most reliable approach.

Question 3

Is there an admission fee to visit the Malwatu Oya stone bridge?

Accepted Answer

The bridge is not a ticketed monument managed by a government archaeological authority. Access is generally open to the public. Visitors should respect the surrounding farming community and any local religious sites along the approach road.

Question 4

What is the best time of year to visit the Malwatu Oya stone bridge?

Accepted Answer

The dry season from May to September is most comfortable and allows close access to the bridge when river levels are low. The northeast monsoon between October and January can flood approach tracks and raise river levels. Early morning visits are preferable in any season for cooler temperatures and active birdlife.

Question 5

Can I combine the Malwatu Oya bridge with Wilpattu National Park?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the bridge lies within driving distance of Wilpattu National Park along the Malwatu Oya river corridor. A day trip combining the heritage site with a safari entry at Wilpattu is feasible with an early start from Anuradhapura. Private transport is essential for this combination.

Question 6

What wildlife might I see near the Malwatu Oya stone bridge?

Accepted Answer

The dry-zone scrub forest and riverbanks around the bridge support a variety of birdlife, monitor lizards, and occasionally wild elephants moving through the Malwatu Oya corridor. The river itself attracts water birds, particularly in the early morning. Wildlife sightings are incidental rather than guaranteed, but the area is genuinely rich in dry-zone fauna.

Question 7

Is the Malwatu Oya stone bridge suitable for children or elderly visitors?

Accepted Answer

The site involves walking on uneven stone and rocky riverbank terrain, which requires reasonable mobility. Closed shoes are strongly recommended. The bridge is not difficult to reach on foot once you arrive by vehicle, but the unpaved approach road can be bumpy. Elderly visitors and young children should factor in the terrain when planning the outing.
