Kumana National Park sits within Sri Lanka's Eastern Province and is one of the island's most significant wildlife reserves, particularly celebrated as a bird sanctuary. The park draws ornithologists and nature enthusiasts from around the world, owing to its remarkable diversity of resident and migratory bird species, among them the rare black-necked stork and a wide array of migratory waterfowl that gather in and around the park's extensive wetlands.
Beyond its birdlife, Kumana shelters a compelling range of larger wildlife. Elephants, leopards, and crocodiles all inhabit the park, and the varied terrain — spanning lagoons, forests, and wetland expanses — provides a rich backdrop for a safari. Each guided visit lasts approximately three hours, and the park rewards those who time their arrival well: early mornings and late afternoons consistently offer the clearest conditions for both bird watching and wildlife sightings.
