About this experience
Wasgamuwa National Park spans the Matale and Polonnaruwa Districts and ranks among Sri Lanka's most prominent wildlife reserves. Its varied landscape — encompassing open grasslands, forested areas, and riverine habitats — supports a remarkable range of species, most notably large herds of elephants alongside sloth bears, leopards, and a rich diversity of birdlife.
A three-hour guided safari by jeep allows visitors to move through the park's different habitat zones in the company of an English-speaking local driver, who brings familiarity with the terrain and its resident wildlife. Early morning and late afternoon remain the best times to visit, offering cooler conditions and the greatest likelihood of sightings as animals move through their natural surroundings.

There appears to be only one gate in from the south and its a long…

Relaxed morning
We were traveling with the driver Shameera. He speaks a bit of German and has a lot of experience as he has been touring for 10 years. He told us a lot about the animals. It was a nice morning!

A real alternative to the other parks, but beware: elephant attacks keep happening here
A really scenic park with a number of smaller elephant herds. However, attacks by the grey giants are really commonplace here, especially a cow likes to target the jeeps. With a knowledgeable jeep driver, however, this i…
