About this experience

Perched above the lake in the heart of Kandy, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is one of the most venerated sites in the Buddhist world and a designated UNESCO World Heritage property. The complex dates to the 17th century and is steeped in a royal legacy that shaped the religious and cultural identity of Sri Lanka for centuries. Within its gilded, intricately decorated shrine rooms rests the tooth relic of the Buddha, which has drawn pilgrims and devoted visitors from across the world throughout its long history. The architecture alone rewards close attention, with its carved stonework, richly adorned interiors, and the layers of craftsmanship — worked in gold, ivory, and precious materials — that speak to the reverence with which the complex was built and maintained.

Over the course of around two hours, an English-speaking local guide brings the temple to life in a way that moving through it alone simply cannot. Rather than a surface-level tour, the visit draws on the guide's knowledge of the temple's history, the significance of the rituals conducted within its walls, and the architectural details that give the complex its distinctive character. The guide contextualises what visitors are seeing — how the relic came to Sri Lanka, why it holds such importance in Buddhist tradition, and how the daily observances at the temple have been shaped by that history. It is a genuinely informed accompaniment to a place that rewards understanding.

The tour is offered for parties of one to eight guests. At booking, guests choose whether to include an entrance ticket; if selected, a Lakpura service manager will be waiting at the temple entrance to hand it over, so there is no need to join the ticket counter queue. A physical ticket can be issued on request. Guests who already hold an entrance ticket are welcome to book the guide alone. Transport to and from the temple is not part of this arrangement, so guests make their own way there. For a quieter experience, a visit at 6:00 PM is recommended.
