Question 1

What is the Sinhala name for mint leaves?

Accepted Answer

Peppermint is commonly known as 'Meenchi' (මීන්චි) in Sinhala, a term used across Sri Lanka's markets and home gardens. Spearmint may be referred to similarly, though the distinction between species is not always made in everyday conversation.

Question 2

Does mint grow well in Sri Lanka's climate?

Accepted Answer

Yes, several mint varieties thrive in Sri Lanka. The cooler hill country districts produce high-menthol peppermint, while spearmint and Asian mint grow well even in lowland coastal areas. Mint is generally considered easy to grow from cuttings and requires little specialist knowledge.

Question 3

Is peppermint tea from Sri Lanka caffeine-free?

Accepted Answer

Pure peppermint leaf infusions are naturally caffeine-free, as they contain no Camellia sinensis (tea plant) leaves. Blended products that combine peppermint with Ceylon black or green tea will contain caffeine, so check the label if this matters to you.

Question 4

What is the difference between peppermint and spearmint?

Accepted Answer

Peppermint is a hybrid of spearmint and water mint, and it has a significantly higher menthol content, giving it a sharper, more intense cooling flavour. Spearmint contains carvone as its primary flavour compound, which is milder and slightly sweeter, making it more versatile in cooking.

Question 5

Where can I buy authentic Sri Lankan peppermint tea online?

Accepted Answer

Lakpura's online store stocks a range of peppermint herbal teas from established Sri Lankan brands including Dilmah, Zesta, and Basilur. These ship internationally and are a convenient way to enjoy island-grown and blended peppermint products at home.

Question 6

Can mint leaves be used in Ayurvedic medicine in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Mint has been used in traditional medicine practices on the island for generations, primarily to aid digestion, relieve congestion, and cool the body in hot weather. It appears in some Ayurvedic compound formulas, though its most common medicinal application is as a simple herbal tea or steam inhalation.

Question 7

What food goes well with fresh mint in Sri Lankan cooking?

Accepted Answer
