Question 1

What family does Paramignya monophylla belong to?

Accepted Answer

Paramignya monophylla belongs to the Rutaceae, commonly known as the citrus or rue family. It is a woody climber rather than the tree or shrub form typical of many family members. The genus Paramignya is distributed across South and Southeast Asia.

Question 2

Is Paramignya monophylla used in Sri Lankan Ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is formally listed in the catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants of Sri Lanka. As with many forest-sourced plants in the Rutaceae family, it carries ethnobotanical significance in the island's traditional healing tradition. Detailed clinical studies specific to this species remain limited in published literature.

Question 3

What does the name monophylla mean?

Accepted Answer

The species epithet monophylla comes from the Greek words for 'single leaf'. It refers to the plant's unifoliolate leaves — each leaf has a single leaflet — which is an unusual characteristic within the Rutaceae family, where compound leaves are far more common.

Question 4

Where in Sri Lanka does Paramignya monophylla grow?

Accepted Answer

The species is associated with low-country and mid-elevation forest habitats, particularly in moist and intermediate zones. It has also been recorded in scrub woodland in drier parts of the island. It typically grows as a climber along forest edges and riverine margins.

Question 5

How do you identify Paramignya monophylla in the field?

Accepted Answer

Look for a woody climber with single, oblong-ovate leaves 5–10 cm long that have a rounded base and a slightly notched or blunt tip. The underside midrib retains fine hairs even when the rest of the leaf surface is smooth. Small flowers appear in short clusters in the leaf axils, and the fruit is roughly globose or pear-shaped with fine surface pubescence.

Question 6

Can I see Paramignya monophylla in Sri Lanka's botanical gardens?

Accepted Answer

It is not a commonly cultivated species and is unlikely to be found as a labelled specimen in general botanical gardens. Encounters are more probable on guided forest walks in wet-zone or intermediate-zone habitats. Specialist botanical guides in areas such as the Sinharaja buffer zone or the Knuckles range may be able to identify it in context.

Question 7

Is Paramignya monophylla related to citrus fruits?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the same plant family — Rutaceae — as oranges, lemons, and limes, but is not itself a citrus crop or close relative of commercial citrus species. The family is large and diverse, encompassing everything from citrus trees to aromatic shrubs and forest climbers like Paramignya.
