About this experience
Bundala National Park, in Sri Lanka's Southern Province, is a Ramsar wetland and a haven for the migratory waterbirds that wing their way to the island each winter. Designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1969 and a national park in 1993, its swampy marshes shelter nearly 400 plant species, around 200 birds — 58 of them migratory — plus mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish and 52 kinds of butterfly.
You explore in a private multi-terrain 4WD jeep, seating up to six, with an experienced driver who doubles as your tracker. Gliding through the biosphere reserve you can spot over a hundred common, rare and endangered migratory birds alongside colourful butterflies, various mammals and amphibians. Bring cameras and binoculars — between May and July especially, these habitats become the nesting and breeding grounds of thousands of birds.
