About this experience

Rising from the flat plains of Sri Lanka's Matale District, Sigiriya Rock Fortress stands as one of the country's most significant UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Commissioned by King Kashyapa, the site weaves together an ancient rock fortress, a palace complex, ornamental gardens, and the celebrated mirror wall that once reflected the entire western face of the rock. Partway up the climb, a sheltered gallery preserves vivid frescoes that rank among the finest surviving examples of ancient Sri Lankan art, while the summit opens onto a wide panorama of jungle and countryside. The history compressed into this single place — from early monastic refuge to royal citadel — makes the effort of the ascent more than worthwhile.

Your guide meets you at the Main Entrance and leads you to the Ticket Counter and through the Ticket Checkpoint before the site begins to open up around you. From there, the route follows the Water Moat along the outer boundary and into the Water Garden, where your guide explains the sophisticated hydraulic system that once fed its pools and channels. The Rock Garden comes next, revealing how Kashyapa's builders worked with and around the natural landscape rather than against it. The ascent proper starts at the Lion's Paw, the enormous carved forepaws that mark the gateway to the upper rock, and carries you up to the Summit, where the palace ruins spread out above the forest canopy. Descending, the guide draws your attention to the Mirror Wall and its centuries of inscribed graffiti, then leads you through the First Courtyard and into the Audience Hall. The walk concludes at the Cobra Hood Cave, a natural overhang whose curved ceiling gives it its name, before you reach the Exit.

Each booking covers entrance to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress site together with an English-speaking local guide for a visit of around three hours. Purchasing through Lakpura secures your ticket in advance, sparing you the queue at the entrance counter; a physical ticket can be issued on request. Nationals of SAARC member countries are eligible for a discounted entrance fee on presentation of a valid passport at the time of purchase. Arriving early in the morning or in the late afternoon is advisable, when temperatures are cooler and the light across the rock and its gardens is at its most rewarding.

Sunrise Climb Do it!
I did a sunrise walk to the top. Fantastic views. 🌄 Not a climb if you’re scared of heights. There were a couple of sweaty-shaking tourists with fear. The steps can feel exposed. 🥵 Don’t rush to the bottom. There’s a s…
