Mattala Airport to City Transfers

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (IATA: HRI) sits in the dry-zone plains of Hambantota District, roughly 18 km north of Hambantota town and around 235 km south-east of Colombo. Because it serves a part of Sri Lanka that is still emerging as a major tourism corridor, getting your transfer right is more important here than at most airports on the island. Distances are long, public transport options are limited, and the onward destinations — from Udawalawe to Yala to the beaches of the southern coast — each require a different approach.

Where is Mattala Airport, and which destinations does it serve?

The airport occupies a largely flat, semi-arid landscape in Suriyawewa, Hambantota District, within the Southern Province. Its location puts it within convenient reach of several key southern and south-central attractions.

  • Hambantota town — approximately 18 km south, around 25 minutes by road
  • Tissamaharama — approximately 38 km east, roughly 45 minutes by road
  • Udawalawe — approximately 65 km north-west, around 75–90 minutes by road
  • Ella — approximately 90 km north-east, roughly 2 hours by road
  • Colombo — approximately 235 km north-west via the Southern Expressway, typically 3 to 3.5 hours by road
  • Galle — approximately 150 km west, typically 2 to 2.5 hours by road

Travellers heading to Ella or the central highlands will find Mattala a more practical gateway than Bandaranaike International Airport, provided flights align with their itinerary.

What transfer options are available from Mattala Airport?

Unlike Bandaranaike International Airport in Negombo, Mattala does not have a well-established public bus network directly serving the terminal. Passengers arriving here are largely dependent on pre-arranged vehicles or metered taxis organised at the airport.

Pre-arranged private transfers

The most reliable option is a pre-arranged private car or van organised through your hotel or a licensed destination management company. Your driver meets you at the arrivals hall with a name board, and the vehicle is air-conditioned. This is particularly worthwhile if you are arriving late or travelling with children, luggage, or onwards to a remote lodge near a national park.

Airport taxis

A small number of metered or fixed-fare taxis typically operate at the airport. Agree on the fare before departure if it is not metered. For information on how taxi services work across Sri Lanka more broadly, see the Lakpura guide to taxis and private drivers.

Public buses

Public buses do not serve the airport terminal directly. The nearest bus junction is in Suriyawewa or along the A2 highway. This option is impractical with luggage and is not recommended for first-time visitors to the area.

How long does the transfer from Mattala take to major destinations?

Destination Approximate Distance Approximate Transfer Time Road Used
Hambantota 18 km 25–30 min A2 Southern Highway
Tissamaharama 38 km 45–60 min A2 eastbound
Udawalawe 65 km 75–90 min B408 / A18
Ella 90 km 2–2.5 hrs A2 / A23
Galle 150 km 2–2.5 hrs A2 / Southern Expressway
Colombo 235 km 3–3.5 hrs Southern Expressway (E01)

Times given are typical under normal traffic conditions. The Southern Expressway significantly shortens the Colombo journey compared with travelling the old coastal A2 road.

Is the road from Mattala to Colombo good?

The Southern Expressway (E01) runs from Matara northward to Colombo and is the fastest route for transfers heading to the capital or the south-west coast. The road connecting Mattala to the expressway entry point at Hambantota is well surfaced but passes through rural areas where livestock and slower vehicles are a factor, particularly at dawn or dusk.

The roads heading north-east toward Tissamaharama and Yala are generally in reasonable condition, though sections can be slower due to truck traffic and the occasional stretch under repair. If you are heading to a safari camp near Yala or Udawalawe National Park, allow a comfortable buffer before any timed wildlife activity.

What should I know before arriving at Mattala?

Mattala handles a modest volume of traffic compared with Bandaranaike, which means arrivals and immigration are generally quick. A few practical points are worth noting:

  • ATM availability — there are limited banking facilities at the terminal. Carry some Sri Lankan rupees or ensure your card is accepted internationally.
  • Mobile connectivity — signal in the surrounding area is reliable on most major Sri Lankan networks; purchasing a local SIM at the airport simplifies navigation if you are self-driving.
  • Meet-and-greet services — if using a private transfer, confirm your driver's contact number and share your flight details in advance, as delays on regional routes are common.
  • Night arrivals — the surrounding roads are unlit in places. Pre-arranged transfers with experienced local drivers are strongly advised for late-night or early-morning arrivals.

Can I combine my Mattala transfer with a stop en route?

Travellers on private transfers can often arrange brief stops en route with their driver. If you are heading west toward Galle or Colombo, the wetlands and bird-rich lagoons near Hambantota make for a worthwhile pause. Those heading north-east toward the cultural heartland of the island may wish to note that Sinharaja Forest Reserve is accessible via a longer detour through the hill country.

Discuss your preferred stops when booking your transfer so the driver can plan accordingly and ensure you arrive at your next destination in good time.

Is Mattala Airport open for international flights year-round?

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport has the physical infrastructure of a full international facility but has operated with variable flight schedules since opening. The number of carriers using the airport changes periodically. Before booking a transfer, confirm your flight details directly with your airline and check that the terminal handling your flight is Mattala (HRI) rather than Bandaranaike (CMB). Confusing the two airports adds several hours to any transfer.
