About this experience
Renowned for its large elephant gatherings and rich wildlife, Wasgamuwa National Park is one of the island's precious national treasures, set close to the historic city of Polonnaruwa. This tour begins at your Kandy hotel, where an English-speaking chauffeur collects you for the drive to the park's dry tropical forest — a place to fill your lungs with fresh wild air and take in the symphony of crickets and birds. November to May offers the best chance of seeing large herds of elephants.
You can choose a morning, evening or full-day safari — the evening being the finest time, when elephants take their daily bath and birds head off to their nests. Alongside the elephants the park is home to leopard, sloth bear, purple-faced langur monkey, wild boar, sambar, spotted deer and buffalo, while its water pools shelter water monitors, crocodiles, pythons and aquatic birds for clear sightings and memorable photos.

Very quiet park but its a long drive in.
Only 7 jeeps in the park the whole day. We found it good for birds but less so for anything other than the common creatures. Good number of open spaces.
There appears to be only one gate in from the south and its a long…

Relaxed morning
We were traveling with the driver Shameera. He speaks a bit of German and has a lot of experience as he has been touring for 10 years. He told us a lot about the animals. It was a nice morning!

A real alternative to the other parks, but beware: elephant attacks keep happening here
A really scenic park with a number of smaller elephant herds. However, attacks by the grey giants are really commonplace here, especially a cow likes to target the jeeps. With a knowledgeable jeep driver, however, this i…
