About this experience

Lunugamvehera National Park serves as a vital ecological corridor for Sri Lankan elephants moving between Yala and Udawalawe National Park. Declared a protected area in the 1990s, the park extends across approximately 24,000 hectares of dry evergreen forest, undulating plains, and the immediate catchment area of the Lunugamvehera Reservoir — a landscape shaped by the rhythms of the dry zone.

Beyond its resident elephant population, the park supports a varied assembly of mammals, including sloth bear, wild boar, spotted deer, axis deer, and grey mongoose. Birdlife is particularly rich, with over 200 endemic and migratory species recorded nesting and breeding within the park's boundaries. Among the more notable sightings are the Crested Hawk Eagle and the serpent eagle, drawing keen birdwatchers alongside wildlife enthusiasts.

A typical visit lasts around three hours, enough time to cover meaningful ground through the park's contrasting habitats. Booking your entrance ticket in advance is recommended, as the physical ticket must be in your possession at the point of entry.

Peaceful and uncrowded park. We were the only jeep in sight for most of the trip. Usual animals: elephants, deer, crocodiles, buffalo, many types of birds. No leopards. A more relaxed experience, good if you don’t nee…
