About Kumu Beach, Balapitiya

Beneath gently swaying coconut palms on a serene boulder-sprinkled seafront sits Kumu Beach, a contemporary beach hotel in Balapitiya home to 10 indulgent bedrooms, chic living and dining areas basking in the open air, and a generous lawn with infinity swimming pool. Balapitiya's powder-soft beach is footsteps away, and this exclusive Sri Lanka beach hotel is an enchanting place to relax, unwind, eat well and enjoy personalised, high-end service.

Location of Kumu Beach, Balapitiya

The west coast of Sri Lanka is sprinkled with numerous photo-worthy beaches yet Balapitiya’s boulder-scattered stretch of sand feels relatively untouched. Shaded beneath swaying

coconut palms, Balapitiya’s long swathe of sand is washed by rolling waves that crash onto rocks in front of the hotel. Wander south down Balapitiya’s broad sandy stretch or dip into the sea from our secluded northerly cove dotted with boulders caressed by scuttling crabs. This stretch of coastline also forms part of the wildlife-filled Madu Ganga River Estuary, and is prime turtle-nesting territory. Under cover of darkness you might see one of Sri Lanka’s five endangered marine turtle species venturing ashore to bury their precious eggs in the soft sand. Local turtle hatcheries in Kosgoda offer glimpses of these beautiful creatures too. Other regional highlights include nearby Ambalangoda, a centre for southern arts and folk culture; Bentota for its wide range of water sports; and Hikkaduwa, lying further south, for its well-established surf culture. Galle’s 17th century Dutch fort is just 50-minutes away by road.

Our twin-bedded Kumu Bedrooms are on the first floor while the four Oceanview Bedrooms and four Oceanview Suites are located on the ground and upper floor, and each directly accesses garden terraces or upper floor balconies with sweeping sea views.

Excursions and Day Tours from Kumu Beach, Balapitiya

If you’re looking for a soulful beach hotel in Sri Lanka, you’ve come to the right place. Balapitiya Beach is quietly secluded and is less than 30-minutes from many of the west coast’s key sights. The beach is a serene setting for long strolls, the Indian Ocean for warm swims and the giant boulders here make perfect pitches for watching a legendary west coast sunset. Within a 15-minute drive of Balapitiya is Ambalangoda, famed for southern arts and culture. The two in-town mask museums are home to some superb examples of the weird and wonderful balsa wood masks used in spirit cleansing ceremonies, local festivals and folk dances rarely performed today, and you can even try carving your own. Just to the north of Balapitiya is Kosgoda, a remarkable turtle nesting beach with hatcheries for visiting, and the estuary of the Madu Ganga River for embarking on boat trips through the wildlife-filled wetlands, edged by mangrove forests, a serene island temple and cinnamon estates. Bentota’s lagoon water sports are a half-an-hour away, as well as Lunuganga and Brief, the striking former homes and estates of legendary brothers Geoffrey and Bevis Bawa. For surfing, you can head down to Hikkaduwa, and for colonial history and shopping, to Galle Fort.
