Wasgamuwa is a region in the Central and North Central Provinces of Sri Lanka, most famous for the Wasgamuwa National Park. This area is known for its rich biodiversity, scenic landscapes, and historical significance.

Der Wasgamuwa-Nationalpark ist ein Naturpark in Sri Lanka in den Distrikten Matale und Polonnaruwa . Er wurde 1984 im Rahmen des Mahaweli-Entwicklungsprojekts zum Schutz und als Zufluchtsort für vertriebene Wildtiere erklärt und ist einer der vier im Rahmen dieses Projekts ausgewiesenen Nationalparks.
Ursprünglich wurde es 1938 als Naturschutzgebiet ausgewiesen und Anfang der 1970er Jahre in ein strenges Naturschutzgebiet umgewandelt. Wasgamuwa ist eines der Schutzgebiete, in denen Sri-Lanka- Elefanten in großen Herden zu sehen sind. Es ist auch eines der wichtigsten Vogelschutzgebiete Sri Lankas. Der Name Wasgamuwa leitet sich von den Worten „Walas Gamuwa“ ab. „Walasa“ ist Singhalesisch für Lippenbär und „Gamuwa“ bedeutet Wald. Der Park liegt 225 km von Colombo entfernt.
About Polonnaruwa District
Polonnaruwa is the 2nd largest city in north central province in Sri Lanka. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO Polonnaruwa has a great history of conquest and struggle behind it and rightfully forms the third element in the Cultural Triangle.
