Swamp Sprite (වගුරැසුරු නිල් ඉරටුකූරා)
Swamp Sprite is a recently discovered damselfly species in Sri Lanka and is considered one of the rarest in the country. It is found in South and Southeast Asia, but the endemic subspecies hanwellanensis is restricted to the wet lowland swamps of Sri Lanka.
Habitat & Distribution: This species inhabits swamp habitats and is usually seen on vegetation under the canopy along very slow-flowing streams or stagnated pools. Since its discovery over a decade ago, it has only been recorded in a few locations.
Rarity & Ecology: The species' rarity is likely due to the limited availability of suitable swamp habitats within its range, making it difficult to encounter even in its known locations.
Conservation: Due to its restricted distribution and habitat limitations, Swamp Sprite is recognized as a species with high conservation priority among Sri Lankan damselflies.
